Project Overview
Dr. Retzlaff's Historic Preservation class in the Fall of 2018 partnered with the City of Montgomery, Alabama to write a preservation plan for neighborhoods. I, alongside three of students, chose to work on the Cottage Hill neighborhood, which is located in downtown.
At the end of our project, we successful created a historic preservation plan for the Cottage Hill neighborhood of Montgomery, AL, conducted a historic resources survey for the neighborhood, crafted recommendations such as: (i) neighborhood-specific guidelines, (ii) overlay districts for the neighborhood, (iii) transfer of development rights, (iv) demolition delay on properties in Cottage Hill, (v) property tax freeze for historic home restoration, (vi) building code relief, and (vii) implementation of cultural environments for the Cottage Hill preservation plan.
