Study Abroad in Salzburg, Austria
One graduation requirement for Ms. Esco two undergraduate degrees was a 10-week study abroad anywhere in the world. Since she was studying the German language, she decided that I should go to a country that spoke some dialect of German. From August of 2017 to December 2017, she studied abroad in a valley city surrounded by the Alps. Starting in August she I called Salzburg home where she lived with an Austrian family while studying at the University of Salzburg. Although her time in Austria was short, she learned about the Austrian culture, history, practiced my German, as well as explored both the cities and countryside of Austria.
Salzburg is a medieval city with a touring fortress, narrow streets, open cafes, large royal gardens, and Christmas markets in December. For her, Salzburg offered a quaint version of Vienna, Austria because it is small and near the mountains with an abundance of cafes. An Austrian tradition called Kaffee-Kultur, coffee culture, was a local custom she picked up quickly. While France is largely known for their elaborate yet delicious pastries like macaroons, Austria too has a long tradition of creating sophisticated desserts such as the famous Sachertorte. Locals and tourist alike can be found at one of the hundreds of cafes scattered throughout the country sitting, chatting, drinking coffee while indulging in a sweet delicate treat. Since arrive back to the US she continues to miss the Kaffee-Kultur the most because dessert does not exist in the US. |
International Travel
Apart from improving her German language skills, the study abroad offered her an ample amount of time to travel internationally among continental Europe, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. During her travels, she ventured through familiar cities like Vienna, Austria and Prague, Czech Republic, but I also explored new ones like Edinburgh, England, Bratislava, Slovakia, or Paris, France.
Traveling provides her the continuous opportunity to see how life works in other countries and has had many positive impacts on her life. Without traveling, Ms. Esco is unsure what her life would be today. She continues to travel to new place each year because she cherish the memories she made with friends and family on vacations. While she cannot say what her favorite country is, a few favorites are shown below.

The most exciting aspect to traveling is having the opportunity to expand my pallet during meals. Trying new foods like goulash, sachertorte, haggis, blood pudding, or kaiserschmarrn allows her to expirence cultural comfort foods, novelties, or famous dishes from the places she visit. Here are two of her favorite dishes that are found in Austria.
